Melinda French Gates to Donate $1 billion to Women’s Causes, Particularly US Reproductive Rights

Reproductive Rights

Among the causes Ms. French Gates will champion are those pertaining to reproductive rights in the US, which have been curtailed in a number of states following the landmark Roe v Wade decision’s overturn.

Its the second billion-dollar commitment she has made in the last five years, following her pledge in 2019 to boost women’s power and influence over a 10-year period. Ms. French Gates highlighted her dissatisfaction with the claims that this is not the right time to talk about gender equality in a guest essay for The New York Times. “Decades of research on economics, well-being and governance make it clear that investing in women and girls benefits everyone,” she stated.

Ms. French Gates announced earlier this month that she would be leaving the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, vowing to focus on women and families. Her departure from the Gates Foundation was rewarded with a $12 billion (£9.4 billion) gift from Bill Gates to carry on her humanitarian efforts. She said that through her company, Pivotal Ventures, she has started giving money to US-based groups that support women’s rights. The awards are for general operational support and are not intended for any specific project.

In her essay, Ms. French Gates addressed the high rates of maternal mortality in the US, emphasizing that moms who identify as Native American or Black are especially at risk. Additionally, by the end of 2026, she pledged to provide $20 million (£15.6 million) to 12 different individuals, each, for non-profit organizations of their choice.
